Tropical Storm (TS) MEGI upgraded from Tropical Disturbance 96W (LPA), has accelerated rapidly northwestward and is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) tomorrow, Saturday (Sept. 24). It is to be named locally as HELEN. Based on the latest Global Dynamic Forecast Models (GDFM), this system shall pass somewhere in between Taiwan and Batanes Group of Islands on Tuesday, Sept 27 as a well-developed Typhoon. However, the confidence level of this forecast remains low and could still change in days to come.

As of 5:00 PM PhT (09:00 GMT) today, Friday, September 23, 2016, the center of MEGI was located approximately233 km east of PAR or 1,579 km east of Northern Luzon, Philippines [17.5N 137.2E]...with maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center. It was moving West-Northwest @ 37 kph towards easternmost part of the Philippine Sea.

TS MEGI is still too far away to directly affect the Philippines.

Please monitor the situation closely and stay tuned for the latest info on TS MEGI. The next WeatherPhilippines StormWatch on this system will be issued tomorrow evening (Sat Sept 24).
